Hello,

My name is Ian and I am a T4 paraplegic complete.

I suffer severe neurogenic pain from my injury site, right through my back and down my legs.

I have been to numerous doctors and pain management specialists who have prescribed various pain killers. However their impact is minimal and I still suffer significant pain.

If anyone has ever suffered similar problems and can suggest a treatment or solution, I would really appreciate it.

Cheers,

Ian Young.

Hello Ian,

Pain can be hard to diagnose, this is a medical problem and it’s very hard for anyone to ever fully understand your exact pain and problems related to your condition, especially over a forum.

In your situation you need good medical advice, the trick is finding the right Doctor or specialist to help you. See if you get any replies through the forum.

If you have no success through the response in this forum you can contact one of AQA’s Info/peer support staff to obtain some contacts of SCI people who have had simular issues.

Good Luck Ian

Please feel free to contact myself or Naz.

I have had pain issues in the past but I found keeping myself busy makes me forget the pain. I also play tricks with myself to see how I can learn to ignore it. I know that the pain is there, I just know that I have to cope with it.
Doing my daily excersises also helps. If you do a google search on pain management, you will find heaps of ideas of things to try.

I'd have to agree with Nick there. Keeping busy is a great way to help with pain. An idle mind is only going to focus on the pain, keep it busy with other things and your day will not only go by faster, but you'll be surprised how much keeping busy with other activities can be a fantastic medication-free pain.

I also find that keeping busy and in particular exercise is the best way of dealing with pain. I have no genuine feeling below my injury site but every alternate day I feel as if I have a lot of cramp all down my legs and lower abdomen. The doctors have tried variious painkillers with no effect at all. I have to keep my mind of it and the best way to do that for me is to get out on my hand-bike or go for a swim.

I"m also a t4 & suffered severe burning pain . no drug helped they just made me drowsy.i found that treating the pain as a third party & telling it to get lost i could control it . it does take time to learn but is well worth it. now the pain still comes but i laugh at it .the worst thing to do is give in to it or tell yourself that it hurts.declare war on your pain
