Hi, my Mum had spinal cord surgery 1 week ago. Until any further test results come back, her surgeon said she had warfarin induced bleeding in her spinal cord. She had been on warfarin for 3 days prior as treatment for a blood clot in her lungs. Prior to the surgery, she had lost all sensation and movement below her waist. The surgeon HASN'T given us a high chance of her being able to walk again, as she had the surgery after the 24hrs of paralysis. She had backache Thursday morning, gradually got worse, numbness 5pm Thursday evening, surgery was performed 8pm Friday night. She has had minimal sensation in her right leg and foot within 48hrs after surgery, and a small amount in her left leg on the third day. No movement as yet and is still experiencing nausea. This is all new for me and if anyone could give me some information of what to expect, what's normal etc, it would be very much appreciated.

Hi KLW, I wouldn't be basing too much on the now factor. The body has strange ways of dealing with trauma and your mums recovery is yet to start. You may not see any improvement for a few weeks, then the real healing process starts. Many of us spinal injured people don't make gains in feeling and movement for quiet some time after their injury, so don't worry too much now. Every injury is different but you may find sensation returning soon, or may come later but to what degree you must wait and see. I had no feeling at all, now 4 years later have reasonable feeling in one leg and some now in the other, after I was told NOTHING FROM THE CHEST DOWN So what I am saying is that the book the doctors quote from is not at all accurate and they give you the worst senario. Take care of your mum and wait for nature to take its course, hopefully the results will be posative, pass on our regards Cheers Stevo
