REVISED CODE OF THE DISABLED PERSONS’ PARKING SCHEME

In late 2005, a Consultancy Agency was hired by VicRoads and the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) to review the current Disabled Persons Parking Scheme.

The review was undertaken in response to the perceptions that disabled persons’ parking spaces are frequently being misused by people who do not appear to have a disability, thereby making it difficult for legitimate permit holders to access the spaces. There were also concerns about forgery, as well as the proliferation of permits as the current eligibility criteria have made it easy to obtain permits. Older people, in particular, many of whom do not have a disability within the eligibility criteria, make substantial calls on the scheme.

Currently The Disabled Persons Parking Scheme is administered by local councils.

Many of AQA Victoria’s members met with the consultant to voice their concerns. These concerns were then forwarded to VicRoads and the MAV as part of a report.

That was in 2006. There haven’t been any updates since then. In the meantime, AQA is regularly receiving queries from members in regards to the Disabled Persons Parking Scheme, and the inadequacies of it. AQA is contacting the parties involved to find out the results of the review and we will let you know what we find out.

We will also let you know who the best contact people are to get updates from, just in case you want to contact them directly with your complaints.
