What Is Vewsa
The Victorian Electric Wheelchair Sports Association, Incorporated in Victoria, provides sporting and recreational activities for children and adults who require the use of electric wheelchairs (including powered scooters) for personal independence and functional
mobility.
Objectives
V.E.W.S.A. aims to provide opportunities for electric wheelchair users to participate in individual and team sporting events at local, regional, State, National and World levels of competition.
The Sports Program
Teams from both metropolitan and country centres compete at various indoor venues throughout Victoria on a regular basis from Feb/March through to the State Finals in October each year.
Sports that are currently being played include hockey, balloon soccer and rugby (touch football). Other activities offered by the association include social and support interaction for players and their families.
National / International Competitions
A national competition is held annually with most States and Territories participating.A Victorian team of six players is selected from our local competitions. Victoria has enjoyed considerable success at this level with a number of players being selected for the All-Australian team. Victoria has also won on numerous occasions the ‘Roger Melnyk Trophy’ for the best overall team performance at national championships.
Victoria’s record as national hockey champions over many years has been an outstanding achievement. At international level many players from Victoria have been chosen to represent Australia in sporting competitions and events such as the World Hockey Championships held in the Netherlands in 1998.
Fundraising
Funding for the V.E.W.S.A. activities is generated from various sources, including membership fees, sponsorships, raffles and social events such as the Annual Dinner Dance and individual donations.
V.E.W.S.A. is a non-profit organisation and all donations are tax
deductible.
Volunteers
V.E.W.S.A. is organised and run by a group of volunteers consisting of players, parents, families, friends and supporters. There is a consistent demand for people to act as umpires, linespersons, timekeepers and officials as well as assisting with other off court activities such as transport and event organising.
