View Full Version : How to keep warm ???
originally posted by nige
Any tips on how to keep the cold out?
My feet get as cold as ice-blocks.
And when I get cold it takes forever to warm-up.
.... I've used those liquid packs where you push a button to initiate a chemical reation that generates heat. They were recently part of a New Inventors (ABC TV show) wet-suit invention for sooky surfers. The only problem is that you have to boil them in water to reset the liquid.
.... I have also used the bag of beans or wheat that you stick in the microwave to heat up.
.... I know some people wear "long-johns" or thermal clothing
What works for you?

Hey nige, about the only thing i can use to feel warm is having a doona chucked over me while in my wheelchair, and cranking my heat pump up to 25°. And even then some days i have a chill that i just can't shake.

G'day Nigel
I am one who suffers from the cold a lot !
My trick is to wear thermal underwear top & bottom, I have a general rule that if its under 20dec I'll wear my thermal's. Nice and warm !
And for the really cold days the old scarf around the neck makes a big differance.
Keep Warm

hi nigel,
yep, i'm with Para Bob... a good long scarf around the neck makes a difference and a wool beanie or a hat is great for stopping heat loss through the head.
The bag of wheat heated in the mickey wave is great, its warm on a cold night and you can put the bag on your lap and rest your hands on it during the day... just make sure you dont burn anything. i have a 1000w mickey wave and i heat the wheat bag for 2 minutes, the bag also has an outer bag of smooth soft velvet to dissipate the heat and make it more comfortable against the skin.

Nige,
My advice is to throw your heat pack with the beans away. Thanks to a carer cooking 1 I used a little too long, I had a trip to the Austin to have a skin graft on a nasty burn.
I agree with Thermals. I wear thermal leggings for anything under 24 degrees. For real cold days, I invested in a lined polar flease from Katmandu and find myself very warm when it is very cold
